APA: Formatting

Rules

  • Double spaced throughout
  • First page is the cover page
  • Second page is the abstract
  • Third page is the start of your paper
  • Reference page is at the end
  • Use a standard font and size (ex. Times New Roman, 12 pt.)

Running head

  • According to APA 7h edition, a running head is only needed for a published paper. (see more information here)
  • Found on every page (including the cover page)
  • Has, in all caps, the title of your paper (but no more than 50 characters)
  • The first page has the words "Running head:"
  • After the first page, omit "Running head:" but include the title

Abstract

  • Falls on the second page of your paper
  • 150-250 words
  • A non-indented paragraph
  • The title "Abstract" should be centered and at the top of the page
